Luz Beach Apartments, self catering accommodation in Praia da Luz, AlgarveMany come to the Algarve and Praia da Luz to enjoy the beautiful beaches, but the surrounding countryside is well worth exploring.

Many of our guests enjoy lovely scenic walks directly from the Luz Beach Apartments. Heading west from the apartments along the coastal path will lead you to the neighbouring fishing village of Burgau, which takes about 1 hour. If you are a runner this is also a great run if you want to keep fit whilst you are away! Or heading east you can climb to the top of the cliffs and walk along the cliff top to Lagos lighthouse.

Caldas Do Monchique is a quaint and unspoilt spa town, high in the Monchique hills and is well worth a visit for it's lovely waters, delicious traditional Portuguese food and its fascinating ruined convent.

Lagos, just 5km away from your accommodation in Praia da Luz, features a picturesque, walled old town with several beautiful churches, a fortress and a dizzying array of narrow, cobbled streets and squares. There is also now a well established marina with restaurants and bars overlooking the boats and old town. Lagos Marina is the home of the legendary "Cais Bistro and Bar", where cocktails and great food are served all day long from a stunning waterside location.

A visit to Sagres and Cape St Vincent is a must whilst visting the Algarve. Just 20 minutes drive from your accommodation in Praia da Luz, Cape St. Vincent - the most south-westerly point of mainland Europe - is a stunning visit with vertical cliffs stretching down over 75m to the crashing swell of the Atlantic Ocean and one of the most powerful lighthouses in Europe.

Nearby Sagres boasts an enormous 16th century fortress on a promentory out into the sea and phenomenal views of the cliffs and islands surrounding this wild coast. It was Sagres that Infant D. Henrique, Prince Henry the Navigator, came to in the 15th century to work on his obsession to push back the frontiers of the known World. He established a base for exploration, facilitated the great voyages and opened a phase in Portuguese history, called the Age of Discovery. You can see his enormous compass rose in the fortress of Sagres.

You can take cycle tours from the top of the Monchique hills, the tallest in the Algarve, and free-wheel through the eucalyptus forests before finishing with a swim in a freshwater lake.

There are local riding schools from where you can explore the undulating countryside on horseback.

It is also possible to visit Seville and Lisbon which are approximately a 2.5hr journey from Praia da Luz by car. The route is well maintained motorway, making for pleasurable day trips and car hire or organised excursions can be arranged at reception.
